Self-organization
Many computational systems will exhibit a quality
of self-organization. If a structure arises from the interaction
between independent systems and their environment, without that
structure being explicitly designed into the system it is a result
of self-organization. This is also known as emergence, or a "bottom-up"
process.
Systems can be designed to have self-organization
with a particular result in mind, but the quality of emergence is
significant because complex form can often be achieved from simple
rules.
