Following up on my post a few days ago about online storage: I just rechecked the Box.net web site only to discover that they have increased their prices rather than drop them. 5 GB is now $7.95/month or $79.95/year. 15 GB is $19.95/month or $199.95 per year. I might be willing to pay that – if we were talking about 100 GB of storage.

I’ve looked around at other solutions, but haven’t found any that seem really appealing. I’d be happy to hear suggestions or any feedback about your own experiences.

HI,

Well, if you’re looking for simple backup functionality you should check Mozy (www.mozy.com) because it is cheap ($5/mo for unlimited storage) and it works fine. No fuss.

If you really need file management and more complex functionality then I’d try Mediamax (www.mediamax.com). It offers 25Gb for free and I believe prices are much lower than box.net.

Hope this helps.

Nuno

I’m not looking for automatic backup, more like an online hard drive that allows easy organization of files and with the option to share folders etc. Mediamax (formerly Streamload) has a seriously bad rep according to online customer feedback, so I don’t feel like giving them my money…

what about amazons’s s3?
i haven’t tried it, but seems to be what your looking for.
i would set up a a home server and offer links to the s3 for the high bandwidth content.

Storage
$0.15 per GB-Month of storage used

Data Transfer
$0.10 per GB – all data transfer in

$0.18 per GB – first 10 TB / month data transfer out
$0.16 per GB – next 40 TB / month data transfer out
$0.13 per GB – data transfer out / month over 50 TB

Yeah, I’ve been looking at that. Box.net really does offer the best interface for sharing files, but S3 would be much cheaper for bulk storage.

nfshost.com are pretty reasonable for storage – I use WinSCP3 to up/down load which is graphical but, admittedly could be nicer.

That’s an interesting link, thanks for posting it. In the end I decided to go with Amazon S3, using JungleDisk as an interface. It mounts the network disk in Windows, and I can always retrieve my data. It also features an easy backup option that I’m now using to backup my critical files.

Nice theme – did you build it?
